1. Introduction of Our Team
The Key Laboratory of Coastal Biology and Bioresource Utilization (KLCBB) at the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, CAS, is a multidisciplinary research platform in biology and bioresource utilization. It conducts interdisciplinary studies that combine fundamental research and high technology development, including the ecological and physiological studies of coastal plants, animals and microorganisms, the mechanisms of the coastal biological responses and adaptations to the global changes, the utilization of coastal biological and chemical resources, and the conservation and sustainable management of resources of coastal areas. It houses 11 principle investigators and 28 research-active scientists, and has a good fraction of young and energetic graduate students. The research in the key lab is mainly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, State Oceanic Administration, National Natural Science Foundation of China and CAS. Following the concept of "create value beyond academic boundaries", The Laboratory of Biological Resources focuses on multidisciplinary research and business needs. At present, Coastal Plant Research Group, High-value Utilization of Biological Resources Research Group, Chemical Ecology and Anti-fouling Research Group, Natural Product Chemistry Group, Coastal Bio-Products R&D Group, Environmental Microbiology Research Group, Microbial Enzyme Research Group. A lot of remarkable achievements have been made in fields of marine resources, marine chemistry, marine anti-fouling technology, chemical ecology, natural products, and marine microorganisms. Our team is supported by many projects and foundation from the national ministries, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shandong Province and Yantai City, such as the National "Eleventh Five-Year plan" projects, "863" key projects, national Natural Science Foundation, CAS Knowledge Innovation projects, CAS President Special Award funded projects, outstanding Youth Foundation of Shandong Province, Science and Technology Program of Shandong Province, natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province, Science and Technology development projects of Yantai. Two hundred research papers have been published and more 100 publications are indexed by SCI or EI. More than 20 patents have been published, and many of them have been industrialized.  2. Research Field The Key Laboratory of Coastal Biology and Bioresource Utilization established on the cornerstone of coastal plant resources and coastal microbial resources, set the exploitation and protection of the coastal biological resources as the final target, and oriented with the development of high value-added environmental friendly product. We are going to build the development platform for coastal industrial product, microbial resources, utilization of polysaccharides and chemical ecology by the technology platform of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Coastal Plant Research Group is mainly engaged in coastal plant research, including mining and screening plant functional genomics by genomics and genetic engineering technology, screening and building high-quality germplasm by molecular / genetic engineering, and developing high-value products by metabolic engineering. High-value Utilization of Biological Resources Research Group is mainly engaged in natural biological active substance screening, targeted modification and corresponding product development, is mainly directed against carbohydrate compounds such as chitosan, chitin, trehalose, inulin for comprehensive utilization development. Chemical Ecology and Anti-fouling Research Group is mainly engaged in marine ecology and anti-fouling research. The main research fields include: (1) The plant chemical ecology and ecological functions of the plant secondary metabolites; (2) The formation mechanisms and ecological significance of the biofilms in marine fouling; (3) The development of environmental friendly anti-fouling agent; (4) The degradation and alternative development of DDT and other toxic anti-fouling agent. Natural Product Chemistry Group interests are the discovery of bioactive secondary metabolites from coastal salt-tolerant plants and their symbiotic microbes and nonsymbiotic microbes, and the application of them in agriculture, foods, and drugs, as well as the induced metabolism and biosynthesis of coastal microbes. Coastal Bio-Products R&D Group focuses on coastal bio-resources, especially salt-tolerant plants and coastal bio-waste, aimed to develop high value-added bio-products, we are committed to research new technologies and processes for sustainable coastal development and utilization of biological resources. At present, we are focused on works as below: breeding of new salt-tolerant plant species; active material extraction, separation and purification from salt-tolerant plants; green bio-processes and development of new functional bio-products. Environmental Microbiology Research Group is mainly engaged in marine microbiological research: (1) Microbial ecology of the typical coastal environment and important biogeochemical process; (2) Molecular ecology of the coastal eukaryotic microbial; (3) Microbial diversity and coastal resources. Microbial Enzyme Research Group is mainly engaged in microbial degradation studies of persistent organic pollutants (POPs): (1) Screening of microorganisms digesting of POPs; (2) Functional behavior study of microbial degradation of POPs; (3) Screening pollution and pathogenic microorganisms in the coastal environment, and building a rapid detection method.
