2011 LOICZ Open Science Conference

2011 LOICZ Open Science Conference (LOICZ OSC 2011) will be held on 12-15 September, 2011, in Yantai, China.

The conference is organised in close cooperation with the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the LOICZ Regional Nodes in Yantai, Singapore and Chennai.

The aim of the LOICZ OSC on “Coastal Systems, Global Change and Sustainability” is to bring together the international research community working on land-ocean issues, show-case the width and scope of ongoing research, help to build a community in this highly interdisciplinary field, and to inspire new research, theory building and applied science. The conference is integrative in nature, amalgamating different experiences and disciplinary “angles” worldwide to generate new levels of understanding and improve decision making in policy and practice. LOICZ particularly invites innovative approaches, coastal practitioners and early stage researchers

Bearing in mind the grand challenges presented in ICSU’s visioning process (http://www.icsu-visioning.org), LOICZ invites contributions to the following scientific themes and encourages the study of vulnerability, dynamics and resilience of land-ocean systems at local, regional and/or larger scales:

  • Social-Ecological Systems and Scales
  • Vulnerability and Resilience
  • Adaptive Capacity and Mechanisms
  • Spatial/Temporal Scales
  • Earth Observation and Monitoring
  • Assessing, Modeling and Scenario Building
  • Coastal Economics, Ecosystem Goods and Services

Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research,Chinese Academy of SciencesYantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research (YIC) is a research body affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), specializing in the exploration of natural resources and environment and in related hi-tech inter-disciplines. It was co-established in June 2006 by the CAS, the provincial government of Shandong and the municipal government of Yantai in the Shandong Peninsula. The mission of YIC is to combine knowledge and technology innovation with regional innovation, to integrate scientific and technological innovations with training for qualified personnel, to develop co-establishment by the CAS and the local government with international cooperation, and to make Science and Technology contributions to the country for coastal zone sustainable development.

LOICZ

Web site: http://www.loicz.org

LOICZ aims to provide science that contributes towards understanding the Earth system in order to inform, educate an d contribute to the sustainability of the world’s coastal zone. Therefore LOICZ seeks to inform the scientific community, policymakers, managers and stakeholders on the relevance of global environmental change in the coastal zone.

Yantai Brief Introduction

Yantai has a long history, and it was called Zhifu in the ancient times. In 200 B.C. the first emperor of China once shot fish here with bows drawn and arrows set, forming afterwards "the fish shooting platform". For fighting against the sea rovers, the Ming Dynasty set up the beacon fire stand in the year of 1398 and Chinese "Yantai" hereby achieved her nomenclature. And Yantai became one of the first ports that opened up to the outside in 1861. In 1958, Yantai district was set up. In 1983, Yantai City was set up. In 1984, the State council approved Yantai as one of first 14 coastal cities in China opening to the outside world. About 17 countries setup their consulates in Yantai from 1862 to 1930. Meanwhile, banks, churches, schools, and even the first post office in China were set up to serve the increasing foreign institutions. Now most of the relics are preserved and renovated and are open to public.

Yantai City lies in the northeastern part of Shandong pennisula, bordering on the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. It is situated at the foot of the hill and beside the sea with beautiful scenery. There are many interesting places which attract thousands of tourists from all over the world, such as the Penglai Pavilion, the stone Tablet Inscriptions of the North Wei Dynasty(386-532) on Mt. Yunfen, Changdao Island-the fairy land on the sea, Horse Raising Isle, National Forest Parks, natural preservation areas, provincial tourist and holiday resorts. The graceful islands, fascinating gulf and blue water with golden sands make Yantai one of the most famous tourist sites and summer resorts in northern China. The simple and honest life style, fresh and opening culture, rich tourist resources and colorful touring activities of Yantai will bring you a new sense of recreation.
