Professor Menachem Elimelech from Yale University Visits YIC

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has named Menachem Elimelech, Roberto Goizueta Professor from Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University, a 2015 recipient of International Distinguished Scientist. From July 17 to August 15, Professor Menachem Elimelech is invited to visit China and deliver a series of lectures in Shanghai, Qingdao and Yantai.

From July 22 to July 27, Professor Menachem Elimelech visited Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research (YIC), and participated in the awarding ceremony of International Distinguished Scientist. On July 24, Prof. Yongmin Luo, YIC institute acting director, awarded Prof. Elimelech the certificate of “International Distinguished Scientist”, on behalf of YIC.

Followed by the awarding ceremony, Prof. Elimelech kicked off the symposium of filtration membrane and seawater utilization at YIC through delivering a lecture entitled “High Performance Membranes for Energy-Efficient Desalination and Wastewater Reuse”, where he introduced the State-of-the-art membrane technologies for Desalination and reuse of wastewater. The host, Prof. Yunxia Hu, introduced the research progress of seawater utilization techniques at YIC. Eight other scholars and experts from China gave invited lectures on filtration membrane and water treatment, including Prof. Qingshan Niu from China University of Petroleum (Hua Dong), Prof. Jun Ma from Harbin Institute of Technology, and others from Tianjin Tech University, and China Ocean University.

During the visit, Prof. Elimelech also delivered a seminar on "Practical Tips for Writing Effective Papers" to faculties and students on July 23, and shared his experience on writing papers. More than 150 faculties and students attended this event and benefited from his talk.

Prof. Elimelech is a membrane of US National Academy of Engineering and the Roberto Goizueta Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University. Prof. Elimelech is highly regarded for his research on water-energy nexus. Until now, Professor Elimelech has published more than 300 Science Citation Index papers including review papers in Nature and Science journal, and has received over 38 thousand citation quotes. His H-index is up to 108. He was listed as a highly cited scholar by the Thomson Reuter ISI Science Citation Index at 2014. Professor Elimelech has received major awards in recognition of his research including the Clarke Prize for excellence in water research, American Society of Civil Engineers, Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering; Yale University Graduate Mentor Award; AEESP Frontier Award in Research; American Institute of Chemical Engineers Lawrence K. Cecil Award in Environmental Chemical Engineering; World Class University Professorship at Korea University; Yale University Postdoctoral Mentoring Prize and 2015 Eni Award for ‘Protection of the Environment’; and so on.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences annually awards International Distinguished Scientist worldwide to 20 distinguished international scientists actively working at the frontiers of science and technology for the purpose of lecturing, leading workshops, and interacting with faculty and students for one or two weeks in China. The goals of the program include strengthening ties between awardees and Chinese scientists and enhancing the training of future Chinese scientists.
