Professor Jim Mitchell from Flinders University visited Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and presented his research work on March 25th, 2014. Prof. Mitchell delivered an excellent lecture entitled “Aquatic Microbial Heterogeneity” which focused on the heterogeneity of marine microorganisms. In his talk, Prof. Mitchell explained the concept and importance of heterogeneity, and described the microbial heterogeneity in marine environment at various scales.

Prof. Mitchell is leading scientist on the biological oceanography research and small scale microbial processes in the ocean. This claim is supported by the past several publications in the famous journals Nature and Science. Within the last few years, he has given invited talks at many conferences and seminars including Masschusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge University and Gordon Research Conference.
