On March 20, 2025, the China Yantai - Pacific Island Countries conference on Zero - Carbon Cooperation was held in Beijing. The conference was guided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and hosted by the People's Government of Yantai City. Ambassadors of the Pacific Island countries to China, including the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Tonga to China, the Ambassador of the Federated States of Micronesia to China, the Ambassador of the Independent State of Samoa to China, the Ambassador of the Republic of Vanuatu to China, the Ambassador of the Solomon Islands to China, the Ambassador of the Republic of Nauru to China, and the Counselor of the Embassy of Papua New Guinea in China, attended the conference.

Han Guangxuan, the deputy director of the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the conference. Focusing on issues such as the special geographical location, fragile ecosystems, and more severe climate challenges faced by the Pacific Island countries, he highlighted the targeted marine science and technology service plans. These plans included the construction of the seaweed industry chain, research on addressing land subsidence and sea - level rise, and scientific and technological training for the coordinated development of marine ecology and the economy.

The conference attracted more than 80 participants, including ambassadors of Pacific Island countries to China, representatives of organizations, think - tanks, and enterprise representatives.
