Sep. 17, 2024, The PIFI Distinguished Fellowship Prof. Bruce C. Glavovic from the Massey University of New Zealand invited by Dr. Jianhui Tang visited Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
During the visit, Deputy Director Prof. Han Guangxuan awarded Professor Glavovic the Certificate of Chinese Academy of Sciences PIFI Distinguished Fellowship. Prof. Glavovic visited three research stations, including the Coastal Wetland Station, the Saline-alkali Agro-ecosystem Station in the Yellow River Delta, and the Muping Coastal Environment Research Station. After that, Prof. Glavovic gave lectures on “The Thin Blue Line: Our fragile safety cordon in the face of escalating coastal hazard risk” and “Estuarines & Coasts: Real-world experiences, prospects, & re-imaging ocean and coastal governance”. Each lecture ended with a warm discussion on the importance of the coast, the nature of land-ocean-atmospheric interactions, coastal hazard risk, and pathways to climate-resilient development. The lecture of ”Post-grad research & publishing” was for undergraduate students to provide experience and advice on paper writing.
Prof. Bruce C. Glavovic got his PhD degree in 2000 at the University of Virginia, USA. In 2002 he began to work at the Massey University of New Zealand. Prof. Glavovic has been a coordinating lead author in IPCC (Ch. 4, 2019; Ch. 18, 2022). His research focuses on: adapting to climate change; natural hazards planning; coastal governance; and collaborative planning and conflict transformation.
In 2022, Bruce received the New Zealand Planning Institute’s Distinguished Service Award and the Individual Research Award from Massey’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He was listed in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists in 2023 and received a Distinguished Scientist award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the IDSVA (USA) in 2024.
