The 4th International Conference on Soil Pollution and Remediation & the 2nd International Workshop on Site Remediation was successfully held in Yantai, Shandong Province, China from September 23rd to 26th. A total of over 200 experts and scholars from more than ten countries attended the conference. Sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the conference was hosted by Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (YIC, CAS) in cooperation with many concerned institutions at home and abroad, such as Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences(ISSCAS); Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences; BCEG Environmental Remediation Co., Ltd.; Shanghai Greenment Environmental Technologies Co., Ltd.; Yantai Haicheng High-tech Co., Ltd. and so on.

Prof. Mengfang Chen, deputy director of the Key Laboratory of Soil Environment and Pollution Remediation, ISSCAS, chaired the conference. At the opening ceremony, Professor Yongming Luo, the acting director of YIC, CAS delivered the opening speech. Several other famous experts, scholars and business representatives also made important speeches, including Prof. Paul Bardos from the University of Brighton; Dr. Lee. A Newman from the State University of New York, USA; Prof. Shenfa Huang, vice president of Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences; and Mr. Liqian Zhai, deputy general manager of BCEG Environmental Remediation Co., Ltd..

The conference discussed issues on the risk assessment of the soil and site pollution, and science, technology and management of the polluted soil and site remediation. During the conference, 61 oral presentations were given closely around 8 topics on environmental processes, fate and transport of soil pollutants; environmental site investigation and risk assessment; phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soil; bioremediation of soil organic pollutants, etc. In addition, more than 40 posters were presented in the poster session.
