DAAD Scholarship Programmes for Ph.D. Studies in Germany 2011

The DAAD offers financial support for individuals who would like to carry out a PhD research project at a German higher education institution or non-university research institute. Grants are available to graduate students with a master’s degree and PhD candidates from both universities and research institutes in China and are open to all disciplines.


1. Types of scholarships:
The Research grants can be used to carry out:

Research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in China ("DAAD Sandwich Scholarship")


Target group
Chinese PhD candidates who will carry out a research project in Germany with the purpose of gaining a doctorate in China (Candidates who have begun their PhD research in 2009 or 2010 will be preferred.)
Duration: 7 months to max. 2 years
Age limit: at the time of application, no more than 3 years should have passed since starting the doctorate
Language requirements:
Applicants are required to have excellent language proficiency in German or English (IELTS academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or TEM 8)
Value: 1000 Euro monthly (depending on award holder’s academic level), health insurance in Germany, international travel expenses, German language course (if required)


Research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany (DAAD Scholarship for full doctoral studies in Germany)


Target group
Chinese holders of a master’s degree (graduation in summer 2011 at the latest) who wish to carry out a PhD research in Germany with the purpose of gaining a German doctoral degree.
Note: Support for a full doctoral program in Germany is primarily provided in areas with insufficient research or academic supervision opportunities in China.
Duration: up to 3 years, in exceptions for max. 4 years
Age limit: at the time of application, no more than 6 years should have passed since gaining the master's degree
Language requirements:
Applicants are required to have excellent language proficiency in German or English (IELTS academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or TEM 8)
Value: 1000 Euro monthly (depending on award holder’s academic level), health insurance in Germany, international travel expenses, German language course

2. Application procedure
Applications have to be submitted to DAAD Beijing Office

Application deadline for 2011/2012: March 31th 2011


Application documents:
The following documents must be be submitted to DAAD Beijing Office in triplicate (1 set of originals or notarised copies, 2 sets of copies thereof). Documents in Chinese always have to be provided together with a certificated translation.

  • DAAD application form (each form signed with your signature, photo attached)
  • DAAD address sheet
  • CV (resume)
  • detailed research outline
  • 2 letters of recommendation on DAAD reference form
  • letter of invitation by German academic supervisor (copy only) or admission to a German PhD-programme (copy only)
  • language certificate for German or English (IELTS academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or TEM 8)
  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees (notarised copy!), each with: Degree certificate (学位证), graduation certificate (毕业证), academic record (成绩单)
  • Gaokao / university admission (高考证明 / 大学录取通知书)
  • middle school graduation certificate (高中毕业证)
  • DAAD "letter of confirmation” signed by the candidate’s employer, confirming that a leave will be granted for the intended research stay in Germany

For applicants for Sandwich scholarship in addition:

  • admission to PhD-studies in China

Incomplete applications or applications sent to the DAAD head office in Bonn will not be taken into account.

3. General application procedure

  • Qualified candidates will be invited to an interview with a selection committee up to Chinese and German Professors in June/July 2011. The interview language will be English or German. Decisions will be announced in August 2011.
  • Successful applicants for full PhD studies with limited German knowledge will start a compulsory German language training in September 2011. For candidates from the natural sciences and engineering the length of the German language training is one semester, for candidates from the humanities and social sciences the length of the language training is two semesters, i.e. the research stay in Germany will begin early 2012 (natural sciences and engineering) or summer 2012 (humanities and social sciences), respectively.
